PM Lee's regret

He says he would have helped Singapore workers train earlier to face challenges of globalisation

WITH the benefit of 20/20 hindsight, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong would have started preparing Singaporeans 'five, or better still, 10 years earlier' for the challenges of globalisation.

While Singapore has put 'a lot of resources' in education and training, he would have pumped in more - and sooner - to help workers upgrade and train for an era in which knowledge is 'absolutely critical'.

'If we had known how quickly the pace of change would accelerate and how much our people would be under pressure from globalisation... we would have put even more resources in,' Mr Lee said last night.

Singapore, he said, would then 'have less of a problem now of workers catching up'.

While the Continuing Education and Training programme to promote lifelong learning can be traced as far back as 1973, it made inroads in a big way only in recent years, after the Workforce Development Agency was set up in 2003.

Workers and employers alike remain in need of persuasion as to the importance of training.

Nuclear Radiation in Singapore?

One of the option for me to consider is nuclear waste.. This could be a potential area to go into as money could be poured here in future.. However, the repercussion if something goes wrong is unimaginable.. I am still reading up..

Modern Science
Modern science began during the European Renaissance. The insights into motion and structure of universe began with Galileo Galelei, understandings of light and gravity began with Isaac Newton. Evolution of species from Charles Darwin.

Science Vs. Technology
Unlike science, technology did not have to wait on the specific discoveries, concepts and mathematical equations of the past five hundred years.. One can fashion medical treatments even in the absence of cogent scientific theories.

Society Lacking Science
Those societies that lack science must either remain deprived of technological innovations or simply copy them from societies that have developed them.

Knowledge Arranger
In the sacred times, beginning in the garden of eden, knowledge accumulated at a sufficient slow rate that it could be passed on orally from parent to child, and on down to each suceeding generation. Once societies become self-conscious bout the knowledge that had coalesced, groups will attempt to set it down in a clear systematic and easily grasped way by the next generation. A book on the 5 Minds for the Future:
Disciplined Mind,
Synthesizing Mind,
Creating Mind,
Respectful Mind and
Ethical

The shocking thing is that a disciplined mind takes a least 10 years to form.. These are mindsets which one could invest time in..

I picked up this book like a metal to magnet.. The author looked impressive, Howard Gardner, a world-renown psychologist and Harvard professor, and the comments printed on the back cover looks authoritative.. So i continued to read it.. The book review at the end of the blog sums up what the author has to say, however, reading the full book is recommended..

Graphene discoverers might win the next Nobel prize for Physics

:)

The American Institute of Physics conducted a poll - who out to win the next Nobel prize for Physics? 320 people cast their votes, and 11.3% of them voted for Andre Geim and Kostya Novoselov - for discovering Graphene.
So obviously this is just speculation - and we'll have to wait to see who the real winners are (on Tuesday, October 5th).

I hope they win, cos i think graphene could do so much... and they discovered this new material in the modern age..
